Programmed cell death. In normal cells certain types of damage will cause the cell to kill itself to protect the surrounding tissue. This "cell suicide" is controlled by genetic triggers and carried out by such mechanisms as releasing powerful compounds like peroxides inside the cell. This self-destruct mechanism is often turned off in cancer cells allowing them to grow out of control.
